AZ Tannerite FAQ

Q: Is Tannerite® Safe?
A: As with all explosives there is a risk. When using Tannerite
® Products as recommended I will say yes! Watch the SHORT video that comes with your product.

Q: Is Tannerite® Legal?
A: That can be up to where you use it, and how much you have. 50 lbs. for personal use. There may be noise violations, State restriction. I have found with my PERSONAL experiences, if it is ok to shoot a High power rifle, it is probably ok to shoot Tannerite

Q: Do you sell Tannerite® to anyone?
A: I do sell to private individuals and gun stores. That is our goal. If I don't feel comfortable with the sale, that doesn't mean I will. Just like any other business, we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone at our own discretion.

Q: Does changing the mixture ratio help?
A: No. If changed to much, it will probably not go off or produce more of a dud reaction.

Q: What is the best way to mix Tannerite®?
A: With (1) of the .5 silver catalyst packets per 1/2 lb. of the white pellets. Look at my help page for good ideas or your video CD.

Q: Is there any debre from Tannerite®?|
A: No, not from Tannerite® itself, but rocks or other things can be flung away like shrapnel from the percussion .Tannerite® produces a sonic boom and water vapor. That is why you need to stay back.

Q: Do you ship out of the continental US?
A: No. We do ship anywhere in the 48 states with a focus on Arizona. Alaska / Hawaii can get it cheaper and faster from their local dealers.

Q: Will a bee bee gun set it off?
A: No, the rifle targets require a min. .223 round moving at 2000+ fps. I have shot Tannerite® w/ my 7.62 X 39 SKS cheep rounds and it didn't go off. But my friend hit the same target with a AK47 and BOOM! ( No I didn't miss :-). The Rim Fire targets are a different story. 7MM mag, 30-06, M4's, M16's, .243's etc. all work, even SKS's with a good round.

Q: Why isn't my question listed here!
A: Because either it is bed time or you haven't emailed me with it yet! Please send me questions to post here.

Q: I bought some Tannerite and it has turned to a solid peice or has become lumpy. Is it still good? What the !@#$%^ ?
A: Yes. What has happened is moisture has gotten into the mix. Roll over it with a pipe or
something in a plastic bag to crush it up again. ( Don't use anything you would use for food prep!)

Q: Why do you try to help so much?
A: Because there are way too many liberial Democrats in this world! I feel what goes around comes around, If I sell anything to you or not. Call me, I will get an answer for you some how.

Straight off Tannerite's Site, Thank you Dan:

Can you make Tannerite® charges smaller or larger?
Yes you can. To make smaller targets, you can simply mix a 1/2 pound target and pour the contents into a plastic container of your choice. It’s best if the container is not brittle, but just about any container will work. A good idea when shooting either small targets, or when shooting at long ranges, is to wrap the target in Duct-Tape. This prevents a spill or leak if the bullet strikes low, a fringe hit, or hits the lid on the target. To make larger targets tape one on top of the other, by hitting one it will initiate them both. Common sense and local noise regulations dictate how much you can use without getting cited for disturbing the peace.

How many spoons of catalyst do I mix into a target?
1 LEVEL teaspoon/5cc (one scoop) per 1/2 pound target, and for one pound targets use two (2) level scoops, If you use too much catalyst, it will be “Fuel-rich” and will be a sluggish explosion or none at all. Just don’t use more catalyst than is recommended.

What if I am approached by an authority and questioned about my targets?
Be honest, show them your Tannerite® and explain what you are doing. If they have further questions please feel free to give them the Tannerite® phone number and website. Tannerite® is sold for a shot-indicator, if you are misusing the product or destroying public property we will not help you. If there are complaints about the noise, please be respectful and stop.

How could something so fun, be legal everywhere?
Tannerite® falls under the same laws as black powder and all other explosives that are exempt for sporting use. Remember though, just because it’s a legal product if used as prescribed, does not mean that you can use it in any manner you wish. Unlike firearms, you can legally shoot them however, there are places where it is forbidden. It is up to the end-user to obtain local authority permission before using our product unless it’s on private property. Even then if you live close to others it’s best to contact them and explain what you are doing.

So called Home Made Tennerite

So-called, “Homemade Tannerite®” and patent rip-off targets can often end in catastrophic failure, and has in fact ended up causing serious injury and death. Unfortunately the internet is always riddled with everyone’s attempts to show others how to engineer various items, and in this case a patented and safe item. We have inspected many other types of infringing products and some homemade recipes are incredibly unstable and can be detonated on accident by static electricity, friction and flame, making it lethal to the creator.? We don’t wish to prevent others from experimenting on their own and having fun, but we have heard it all, from people being blown in half by infringer brand X targets, to a young man who blew his pants off (and some other appendages with it), then claimed it was “Tannerite®”, which it was NOT. Every time someone gets hurt with their own concoction or a fly-by-night patent thief’s product, we get pointed at and we are sick and tired of it.

You have been warned, and Tannerite® accepts no responsibility for any website or individual purporting to have a recipe for homemade Tannerite®. We have spoken with and have on record, contact data to individuals who have in fact been injured by homemade exploding target recipes. The REAL patented Tannerite® target is safe, stable, and can not be activated by anything other than a high powered rifle round.

The only persons or companies allowed to use our trademarked name or sell binary exploding targets, are authorized distributors of Tannerite® Company. We have dealer programs for those who are interested in being in the business of reselling Binary Exploding Targets.

Tannerite® is a binary explosive used primarily as a target for firearms practice. Tannerite is unique in that it is exceptionally stable when subjected to less severe forces such as a hammer blow or being dropped. It is more than 1000 times safer than ordinary black powder since it is not flammable and can not be initiated by any kind of flame or electricity. It is supplied as two powders which are combined to produce the explosive. Tannerite is a trademarked name, and binary exploding targets are a patented invention by Daniel J. Tanner/Oregon.

Tannerite® Company recommends using 0.5-pound (0.23 kg) preparations of the substance, which should detonate when shot by a high-powered rifle. Small caliber rim-fire or slow moving pistol ammunition will not initiate a detonation.

Tannerite® detonations occur at a very high velocity, producing a large explosion and cloud of water vapor. It may be useful for persons who are firing at long ranges; in this scenario, a long-range rifle shooter places targets downrange, retreats to his firing position, and fires. The shooter does not have to walk down range to see if he has a hit, the Tannerite® will detonate and serve as an indicator.

Since the two components are not explosive until mixed, they can legally be purchased in the USA without a license. They can be legally used for sporting purposes in conjunction with small arms, just like black powder and other exempt sporting powder.

The federal government, not the state, governs the manufacture of explosives. They specifically exempt the need for an explosives manufacturing license in five separate statutes. In the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Publication 5400. Q&A section, question #48 expressly addresses that a license that a license is not needed for personal, non-commercial manufacture and use of binary explosives.
